If you begin with “ I have prepared 21 sheets and 126 pages ”, you have lost the room in eight seconds. They hear : more work. They switch off.
If you begin with a question they cannot answer —and they will not be able to— they want the rest. The file becomes the answer to a need they have just discovered. That is the whole difference between selling and teaching.
So : never the contents page first. Never.
0 · Before you go in— 10 min of preparation
Open the guide home page on the projector.Nothing else. No PDF, no tabs, no demonstration of the site.
Check that the five situations unfold properly.
Fill in your admission (§2). Do not go up without having written it.
Print the Pocket Card— one per person. You will hand it out at the end, not before.
Switch off your phone. We are going to talk about the dead.
1 · The opening— 5 min · say nothing about your work
You do not introduce yourself. You do not introduce the project. You tell a scene.
“ A few years ago, I walk into a house. The woman has just lost her husband. She looks at me and she says : ‘He is in heaven now. He is watching us.’
And I have two seconds to decide what to do with that sentence. ”
Then you fall silent. Really. Count to five in your head.
“ Who here knows exactly what he would have answered? ”
Let them answer. Some will correct the doctrine. That is exactly what you want : they have just made the mistake in front of everyone, without knowing it.
And if no one speaks?
That is the likeliest case. In a congregation where one does not contradict the pastor, silence is not boredom — it is deference. Do not panic; do not fill the void. Switch :
“ Turn to your neighbour. Sixty seconds. What would you have answered that woman? ”
The room starts talking all at once. You listen as you move about. Then : “ Who heard an interesting answer — their neighbour’s? ” — people always report someone else’s words more readily than their own. You gather it in without exposing anyone.
Do not humiliate them. You simply say :
“ That is what I would have done too. And I would have been wrong. ”
You have the room. Now you can begin.
2 · The five situations— 12 min · the page does the work for you
Show the home page. Go down to the five situations. Do not read the answers straight away.Put them one by one. Out loud. And wait.
“ He is in heaven now. ”(already put in the opening — you close the loop)
“ We prayed, and he died. We did not have enough faith. ”
The veterans’ association wants to perform its rite at the graveside.
“ Are we allowed to cremate Dad? ” — at 11 p.m.
Someone slips you an envelope.
On each one : let the room flounder for 30 to 60 seconds. Then unfold the answer on the screen.
The silence after situation 2 will be long.Do not rescue it. It is the heart of the presentation : Christ asked that the cup might pass. It did not pass. His faith was perfect. Many in the room have buried someone they had prayed for.You have just lifted from them a guilt they were carrying in silence.
TO BE FILLED IN BY YOU — do not read this as it stands
What is needed here is a real failure, your own, with a real family. Not a formula. Do not say “ I got three of them wrong ” if it is false : they will sense it, and from that point on nothing you say will carry any weight.
It is the very rule the Handbook gives you for the eulogy : “ if what your sermon says about the deceased is not credible, what you say about Christ will seem just as improbable ”. It holds for you too, tonight.
Write it before you go up :“ In that house, I said ______________________________. And I was wrong. ”
“ This file is what I wish I had had that day. ”
Do not say “ let me present my work ”. Say “ here is what I was missing ”.
3 · The three doors— 5 min · the one idea to keep
Go back to the top of the page.
“ There is not one way into this. There are three.
If you open this guide at 11 p.m. with a death on your hands, you read nothing. You take the Pocket Card. Full stop.
If you open it on a Tuesday morning, cold, then you climb the steps. And now is the time to do it —because no one learns to comfort while he is comforting. ”
If the room keeps one sentence from the whole evening, it is that one. Repeat it.
Then the third door. Slow down. Do not skate over it.
“ And there is a third one. It is there for the day when it is you. When it is your wife, your father, your child. Or simply the day you are hollowed out, from burying so many others.
Tonight, in this room, there is someone for whom that door is the only one that matters. ”
And you fall silent. Do not look for who it is. Do not look at anyone. You have only opened the door — he will push it himself, at home, tonight.
4 · The steps— 10 min · go down them; do not detail them
One sentence each. Resist the urge to tell it all.
Step 1 — How to be.“ Your gestures speak before your mouth. Silence is a ministry. If you read one sheet in your life, it is that one. ”
Step 2 — What you believe about pain.“ Everything you will say at the bedside comes out of this.God is not the author of their pain— and you must be able to defend it, not only recite it. ”
Step 3 — The road.“ An expected death is not a sudden death. Two doors. Then six stages. ”
Step 4 — What will fall on you.“ Suicide. A child. A pregnancy that stopped. And the father —whom everyone always forgets. ”
On step 4, stop for one second longer.
“ When a woman loses the child she was carrying, everyone goes to her. The father — they ask him how his wife is doing. No one asks him how he is doing. He lost his child too. ”
That sentence, they will remember it in six months.
5 · The tools— 5 min · show them; do not comment
The Checklist— to be handed to the family’s level-headed relay, not to those most stricken.
The Assessment— for you alone. “ Never wave it in front of the family. ”
The Deuilmètre— to be given to the bereaved.Open it. Show Movement 2.
“ Look at what is written there, in plain words, for the grieving person : If you are angry with God, you are not in the wrong box. ”
5b · The exercise— 5 min · the only thing they will actually do
Everything before this, they have heard. Nothing has been done. Put that right : it costs five minutes.
“ In twos. One is the widow. The other walks into the house.Three minutes. You do not need to know what to say — that is precisely the exercise. ”
Let it run.Stop them at three minutes, even if it is working. Then a single question :
“ Those who played the widow : what did you good? And what did you harm? ”
They will say, of their own accord, everything you wanted to teach them : he talked too much / he stayed standing / he tried to explain to me / he sat down and said nothing, and that was good. You have nothing left to prove.
6 · The exit— 5 min · give them something in their hand
Now you hand out the printed Pocket Card.
“ The file runs to 126 pages. You are not going to read them tonight, and I am not asking you to.
What I am asking you is this : that card, in your Bible. Tonight. Because on the day the phone rings at 11 p.m., you will not have time to search.
And one single thing to do this week : step 1. Ten minutes. ”
You are not asking for 126 pages. You are asking for ten minutes. It is the only promise they will keep — and it is the one that counts.
Then you set the next meeting. At once, out loud, a date.
“ In a month, we meet again for twenty minutes. Each of you comes with one thing : either a visit that went well, or one where you got it wrong.Above all the second. ”
Without that meeting, everything you have just done falls back to zero within a week. Adult teaching without a return does not hold. This is not distrust — it is what we know about the way adults learn.
What you do not do
Do not
Why
Begin with the contents page or the number of sheets
They hear “ more work ” and switch off.
Defend the work, or apologise for its size
You are not selling yourself. You are teaching.
Publicly correct the one who gives a wrong answer
You would be doing exactly what the file forbids you to do to a widow.
Recite the admission I could not write (§2)
It is false as long as you have not filled it in. A borrowed admission can be heard — and it costs more than it brings in.
Wait for the room to answer spontaneously
It will not.Go through the neighbour.
Explain Peckham’s “ rules of engagement ”
That is for your head, not for their ears. At the graveside, you say four words.
Quote Kübler-Ross, Doka or Bonanno by name
No one remembers a proper name. They remember Gethsemane.
End on an exhortation
End on an object in their hand.
If you have only 15 minutes
The opening (the widow, your admission) →situations 2 and 5 only → the three doors→ “ step 1, ten minutes ” → the card in the hand.
Cut the steps, cut the tools, cut the exercise. Never cut the admission, and never cut the third door.
If someone asks you “ why yet another file? ”
Do not justify yourself.Answer with a fact.
“ The Minister’s Handbook tells us what to do at a funeral. It never tells us what to say about God when the family asks why.
Look : the word theodicy is not in it. The word lament is not in it.This file does not replace the Handbook — it fills the hole the Handbook leaves open. ”
