FREN← The path · Quick reference · the detail is in the sheets

The path

Two doors →A. expected death (accompanying the dying) · B. sudden death (breaking the news & the shock).

Then, for both: 1. the first hours → 2. preparing the service → 3. the wake → 4. the service → 5. the committal → 6. the follow-up.

The order adapts to the culture. The kind of death colours everything.

The 3 verbs

  • Train— what does Scripture say? (the state of the dead)
  • Understand— who is in front of me? (grief, culture)
  • Serve— the right gesture, the right word, the right silence.

Never say

  • “God needed an angel / needed him”
  • “It’s better this way”, “everything happens for a reason”
  • “I know how you feel”
  • “He’s watching over you from up there”
  • No vague euphemism that leaves a false hope

Breaking the news (SPIKES)

  • 1. Setting— apart, seated, someone close present
  • 2. What they know— probe first
  • 3. Their consent— “I have very bad news”
  • 4. Say it— “[Name] has died.” Plain, clear
  • 5. Emotion— be silent, stay
  • 6. What follows— say what is going to happen

Hymns — safe

449 · 406 · 116 · 81 · 450 · 368 (SDA Hymnal)

introduce them first: 453 · 393 · 396 · 402 · 409

Avoid:“already in heaven / among the angels / watching over us”; Ave Maria, Requiem, secular songs.

Order of service by kind of death — quick access

(detail: sheet “Walking with Grief”)

  • Stillbirth / infant— name the child; the grief is real
  • Child— Jesus takes the children (Mark 10)
  • Young person— Nain (Luke 7); refuse the cliché
  • Accident / sudden— no “why” pasted on
  • Long illness— rest after the fight
  • The aged— “I have finished the race” (2 Tim 4)
  • Suicide— never “damned”; protect, postvention

The committal — forms of words

Believer:“Since it has pleased God to permit our [brother/sister] to fall asleep in Christ, we commit [his/her] body to the ground, in the sure hope of a joyful resurrection when our Lord returns.”

Faith unknown:“Since God has permitted our friend to lay down the burdens of this life, we commit [his/her] body to the ground, committing all the issues of life to the Father of compassion.”

Texts:1 Thess 4:13-18 · 1 Cor 15:51-55.

“ I saw him ”

30 to 60% of the bereaved see, hear or feel the deceased. It is not madness.

They undergo it → listen; do not correct in the heat of grief.
They seek it (signs, the photograph, a medium, a clairvoyant, a séance) → there, you speak.

Later : “ he sleeps ; nothing can reach him any more ; you will see him again alive, not in a dream. ”

The follow-up

Come back:J+7 · M+1 · M+3 · M+6 · M+12.

Your presence over time > your sermon on the day.

Prolonged grief — refer if…

Beyond 6-12 months: disabling pain, lasting withdrawal, inability to resume life, dark thoughts / alcohol→ refer to a professional. Neither sin nor lack of faith.

The bearing (reminder)

  • Sit at their level, slow down, put the phone away.
  • Silence comforts (Job 2:13).
  • Comfort first; no lesson in the heat of grief.
  • The body belongs to the family: you serve.
  • Non-essential → let it pass; essential → defer, do not humiliate.
